This cute critter is a striped polecat. Found throughout the African continent, this species inhabits diverse areas from coastal sand dunes to forests. They are nocturnal in nature, spending their days sleeping in secluded areas and emerging at night to hunt. As carnivores that feed primarily on beetles and small rodents, polecats can play an important role acting as pest control in areas with pastures, protecting crops local people depend on. The Sonora mud turtle is found in the northern region of Sonora, Mexico into a small part of Arizona. Given the extremely arid environment in which they live, these turtles must have access to an in-water aquatic habitat to survive. In the water, these turtles feed, avoid predators, and mate. Out of water, they look for areas just along the banks of ponds and streams where soil remains moist so they can safely lay their eggs, ensuring that they won’t dry out. Video taken at Turtle Island. #turtl

SOUND ON! For years, nobody knew what this mysterious wild cat species, the güiña, sounded like. Today we do! Thanks to Fauna Andina, a conservation and research center in central-south Chile, we can share the sounds of this cat. Hand-raised by the center after arriving as a ten-day-old orphan, today his vocalizations announce he is one happy cat; those low, fast-repeating sounds you hear are made when he’s excited. #cat #guina #PhotoArk | Joel Sartore, Photographer

In the wild, ornate cowfish are found off the coast of southern Australia, usually in seagrass beds in depths up to 50 feet. When stressed, this species releases ostracitoxin from its skin which can kill other nearby fish, which is why it is rarely kept by aquarium hobbyists. The Guira cuckoo from South America is an extremely social bird that can often be seen in flocks of six to eight birds - a number that can grow to 20 after breeding season ends! This species breeds communally, meaning that several females will lay their eggs in the same nest. With so many parents trying to attend to their eggs, competition can be fierce and often only a quarter of the eggs will hatch successfully. This doesn't seem to be a problem for the birds though, who are the most common cu

Meet Elizabeth Ann, the world’s first cloned black-footed ferret. Her genetics are derived from an ancestor who died nearly 40 years ago. Once feared extinct, captive breeding programs helped save this species. Today, both captive and reintroduced populations descend from just seven distinct genetic “founder” animals, so this limited genetic diversity has always been a concern in the captive breeding program. For many years, the Javan bleeding toad was thought to be extinct. In 2003, one individual was sighted at Curug Cibeureum and in 2018, an additional toad was identified at Mount Halimun Salak. Today, biologists believe that the global population is less than 250 mature individuals, with each wild subpopulation containing less than 50 toads. This slithering serpent is a Mojave Desert sidewinder that calls at Woodland Park Zoo home. Found in deserts throughout the southwestern United States, sidewinders are distinguished among rattlesnakes by the horn-like scales on their heads, which is why many might refer to this species as a horned rattlesnake. Their sidewinding motion, as seen in the clip above, is another unique trait that allows the snake to minimize its contact with the hot desert sand. #sidewinder #desert #Mojave #snake #rat

SOUND ON! Yesterday, I went out to see the sandhill cranes at Rowe Sanctuary in Nebraska. Thousands of cranes landed right in front of us just after sunset. Around 700,000 sandhill cranes use the Platte River now, during their annual migration, with their numbers growing steadily over the years—a rare feat for a bird species these days. | Joel Sartore, Photographer
