On Sunday, our specialist Large Whale Disentanglement Team responded to reports of an entangled humpback whale off Sydney’s Northern Beaches. The whale was observed trailing around 50 metres of green 16mm rope with white floats, consistent with fishing gear. The entanglement involved the whale’s mouth, posing a serious risk to its movement and health. A heartwarming success story from the South Coast! 🐬 Last week, we spearheaded a complex and critical rescue operation to save a young bottlenose dolphin calf near Batemans Bay. The calf had been spotted in mid-June, severely entangled in braided fishing line, restricting its ability to swim. Miraculous Echidna Rehab and Release 🦔✨ In March this year, WIRES volunteers Kylie and Glen were called to rescue an echidna in Kurrajong, NSW. At first, things didn’t look good for the echidna. He had been hit by a car, his beak was damaged, and he was losing blood. He was quickly taken to Taronga Wildlife Hospital, where vets discovered additional injuries from an apparent dog attack. Fortunately, the vets were able to treat his wounds and agreed to care for him at Taronga until he was ready

WIRES Emergency Response Teams tend to our most critical and complicated rescues, and in the recent floods of NSW and QLD were able to provide vital support to animals that simply would not have survived otherwise. This orphaned joey was one of those survivors.
