The Sierra Buttes Fire Lookout in Tahoe National Forest blends outdoor adventure with history. Built in 1915 and redesigned in 1963 with its now-famous 180 aluminum steps, the tower rises 8,587 feet above sea level. Visitors can reach it by hiking or jeeping to the base, then climbing the steps for panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada. Located about an hour north of Truckee, CA and near Sierra City, the Sierra Buttes offers miles of trails to hike and the historic Fire Lookout Tower that was first built in the early 1900s. Operational through the early 2000s it was staffed in the summer months by forest service personal. It's a great hike to take in the views and you'll also see Sardine Lakes along the way.
