The acting head of the IRS is reportedly being ousted after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent complained to President Donald Trump that Elon Musk pushed to place him in the role without Bessent’s assent.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed on Friday that Deputy Treasury Secretary Michael Faulkender has been appointed acting Internal Revenue Service commissioner, replacing longtime IRS career official Gary Shapley in the temporary role.

President Donald Trump just implemented the biggest change yet at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). That last approval was made after a back-and-forth between Bessent and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent led to the ouster of acting IRS commissioner Gary Shapley.
