Verizon (NYSE:VZ) provided an update on the Salt Typhoon cyber attack, saying it contained the incident brought on by the threat actor. The company said Friday, "an independent and highly respected" cybersecurity firm has confirmed the containment by the telecom.

The recent Salt Typhoon cyberattacks may have breached more telecommunications providers than previously thought, with Charter Communications, Consolidated Communications, and Windstream all now believed to also have been affected.

Two of the largest telecom providers in the U.S. said the China-government sponsored threat group is no longer embedded in their networks.

The Chinese-linked Salt Typhoon cyberespionage operation targeted AT&T and Verizon's systems, but the wireless carriers' U.S. networks are now secure as they work with law enforcement and government officials,

Verizon already holds contracts with the Armed Forces in supporting flight line testing equipment, animated simulation and training, full-motion, high-definition video to support telemedicine for its airmen, and ultra-fast artificial intelligence for biometric identification.

This is the first time AT&T and Verizon have publicly acknowledged being affected by Salt Typhoon. For most customers, there’s little reason to worry. Verizon told TechCrunch that the hacking group behind the breach had targeted "a small number of high-profile customers in government." Still, the full scope of the breach remains unclear.

A Chinese hacking campaign, dubbed Salt Typhoon, has compromised numerous U.S. telecommunications firms, including AT&T and Verizon. Exploiting vulnerabilities in Fortinet and Cisco devices, this breach has raised national security concerns.
