The crash happened around 11 a.m. Thursday on the Missouri side of the river near Alton. The helicopter struck power lines, fell onto a barge below and caught fire, according to Missouri State Highway Patrol Cpl. Dallas Thompson, who spoke to reporters at the scene.

The helicopter ran into a powerline and crashed Thursday morning on the Mississippi River near East Alton, Illinois, officials said.

The crash, which happened near the border of Missouri and Illinois, closed a bridge into Illinois. A witness said it “just disintegrated” after coming in contact with a power line.
