The San Francisco Giants made sure to celebrate the 42nd birthday of one of their free-agent signings in a comical way.
Justin Verlander stood directly behind Birdsong and shouted encouragement as he watched. He occasionally looked down at an iPad, which was offering real time feedback on an adjustment that had been suggested to Birdsong.
Three-time American League Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander turned 42 years old on Thursday. He is still hopeful of reaching 300 wins in his big league career.

Three-time Cy Young Award winner and Goochland native Justin Verlander is the new kid on the block after signing with the San Francisco Giants this past offseason.
The three-time Cy Young winner has already been calling his shots on pitches in his first week of camp with the Giants.
“He’s a Hall of Famer, obviously,” Birdsong said of Verlander, who signed a one-year, $17 million deal with the Giants barely a month ago. “Everybody knows who Justin Verlander is. It’s nice to have a guy like that … in my corner and trying to help me out as much as I can. For any of us young guys, it helps a lot.”
