HONG KONG — A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck near one of Tibet ’s holiest cities Tuesday, killing at least 126 people, Chinese state media reported. The earthquake, which was recorded just after 9 a.m. (8 p.m. ET Monday), was centered at a depth of nearly 6 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Chinese state media said at least 126 people had died in the magnitude 7.1 quake near an area of religious significance in Tibet. It was felt in neighboring Nepal.

Tremors were also felt in Nepal's capital, Kathmandu, as well as Bhutan and northern India. China says about 1,500 fire and rescue workers have been deployed to search for people in the rubble.

Powerful tremors shook Nepal’s capital Kathmandu just before dawn on Tuesday, an AFP reporter said, as a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck a remote Himalayan region in Tibet in China. Chinese state media reported that “people have been killed” following the powerful earthquake.

Rescuers in China’s Tibet region searched Wednesday for survivors trapped in rubble, a day after a powerful earthquake killed at least 126 people and injured 188 others. Chinese officials said more than 400 people have been rescued so far. Some 30,000 people have also been relocated after the quake, which destroyed more than 3,600 homes.

Tremors from the magnitude 6.9 earthquake were reported in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu, where buildings were shaking.

At least 126 people have been killed and thousands of houses damaged in the quake, with tremors felt in neighbouring Nepal's capital, Kathmandu and parts of India.

Rescue workers waded through rubble strewn across the ruins in the aftermath of the earthquake, footage showed, while some gave locals thick blankets to keep warm in subzero temperatures.

BEIJING — A strong earthquake shook a high-altitude region of western China and areas of Nepal on Tuesday, damaging hundreds of houses, littering streets with rubble and killing at least 95 people in Tibet. Many others were trapped as dozens of aftershocks shook the remote region.
