The US military has used Apaches, along with MQ-9 Reaper drones and F/A-18 and F-35 fighter jets, as part of Central Command's operation challenging Iran's effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz to most commercial traffic.
A drone boat picked up two US Army pilots from waters near the Strait of Hormuz after their helicopter gunship went down, US military officials said in interviews with various broadcast news outlets.
The attacks came a day after Israel and Iran pulled back from direct confrontation. The Israeli campaign against the Lebanese militia Hezbollah has been an obstacle in U.S.-Iran peace talks.
