Shares of Moderna Inc. fell over 2% on Wednesday after the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) withdrew its funding agreement for late-stage development of the company’s experimental H5 avian influenza vaccine despite positive interim results from early-stage trials.

The Trump administration has slashed $766 million allocated in funding to Moderna Inc., an American biotech and pharmaceutical company responsible for developing vaccines. Moderna was tasked to make vaccines against potential pandemic influenza viruses,

The department cited Moderna’s use of the messenger RNA technology, which it said “remains under-tested,” for the cancellation of the funding.
