The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office has been unable to recover the bodies of the dead skiers since the horrific avalanche Tuesday.

Helicopters flew over the avalanche site to assess the avalanche danger and the snowpack. Later, they began setting off explosives to trigger small snow slides.

According to the world’s largest study of casualties from these hidden weapons, women were much more likely to die from their injuries than men.
