Israel says warplanes hit Tehran again after killing Khamenei, leadership council takes over
By Rami Ayyub, Alexander Cornwell, Nayera Abdallah and Maha El Dahan JERUSALEM/TELAVIV/DUBAI, March 1 (Reuters) - Israel launched a new wave of strikes on Tehran on Sunday, saying it aimed to dominate the skies after killing Iran's supreme leader and leaving the Islamic Republic grappling to rebuild its leadership amid its biggest test in five decades.
The government provided little advice in the days before the attacks or as the bombs fell, more than a dozen Iranians said in interviews.
Iran's strategic allies Russia and China have made strong diplomatic protests, but analysts say neither is in a position to offer meaningful support.
The death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei marks the end of Iran’s post-1979 revolutionary era, tracing the Islamic Republic’s origins, US hostility, Israel tensions, and the recent conflict that escalated into direct war.
Iranians were beginning their workweek as U.S. and Israeli strikes sent people fleeing parts of the capital and parents racing to collect children from schools.
