We already know that the Yanks will be without both Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon to start 2026. Cole is recovering from Tommy John surgery, and Rodon underwent a procedure to clean out some debris from his elbow after the playoffs. So, yeah: the Yankees did need another starting pitcher to fill that gap. Enter Weathers.
The Yankees might also have targeted Weathers because of his legacy with the team. His father, David Weathers, was a standout pitcher for the Yankees in the 1996 postseason. He gave up just one earned run in 11 total innings in the playoffs that year and the Yankees won the World Series championships.
