Iran’s Defense Minister has warned that the country would strike U.S. military bases in the region if a conflict with the United States were to break out, as Donald Trump admitted he is now less confident that a nuclear deal can be reached.

Washington and Tehran have held five rounds of talks since April as Trump seeks an agreement that would place constraints on Iran’s uranium enrichment. He has threatened to attack Iran if no deal can be agreed. Defence Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh said on Wednesday that Iran would target US military bases in the region if the US attacked it first.

Israeli strikes on Iran and Tehran’s vows of reprisals have brought the two Middle East adversaries closer to an all-out war, which also threatens to draw in the United States, at least to some degree.

The risk of conflict is growing as Iran signals strikes on Israeli nuclear facilities despite ongoing nuclear talks.

Trump accused Iran of stalling negotiations. “I’m less confident now than I would have been a couple of months ago. Something happened to them, but I am much less confident of a deal being made,” he said.

Just after three in the morning, sirens sounded across Israel, and Israel’s Defense Minister announced a preemptive strike against Iran.
